Square Hue and Surprise Gifts

It has been a while since I blogged about Square Hue, or blogged at all. But I am getting my life and my nails back together and Square Hue started my “Operation: get it together” with a mid-month surprise.

Meet Square Hue: Black Label Start to Finish

IMAG2208Thats right ladies and dry-handed gentleman, square hue now has a cuticle oil, base coat and top coat.

The shocking arrival came with a thank you card for being a long standing customer. It also came free of charge!

The free gift inspired me to get polishing!

The almond cuticle oil was nice. It went on smoothly and wasn’t greasy. It was light enough for frequent use and I was able to trim my cuticles with great ease. But on to the stars of the show:

IMAG2210The clear base coat was better than expected. While in the bottle the clear base coat looked a bit watery, the base coat was thick and viscous.

The base coat dried evenly with no bubbles and remained a bit tacky. I prefer a tacky base coat so the polish adheres well.

I applied polish in 3 thin coats and all was looking well until the top coat.

IMAG2211 The Wet Look topic coat delivers in the promise of high gloss. My nails were bling tastic. However, 15 minutes later my nails weren’t dry. This top coat turned my nails into a swiffer duster . Every piece of lint and dust clung to my damp nails and completely ruined my manicure.

I am hopeful that if I allow the polish to dry more the Wet Look top coat can become a keeper because the bling was delicious; however the below manicure is with Seche Vite top coat.

Naked Nails: Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

My nails have come a long way since the days I could peel them like a banana.

Here is how:

I  stared using  Quimica Nail hardener. Note this is not a growth aid–it is meant to make your nails hard. It has made my nails beyond hard: I can pick labels, tap to the annoyance of the general public and even submerge my nails in water without them turning weak and brittle. In order to fully make your nails better you have to have a good starting point.

IMAG1386

Before I started using quimica I filed my nails down to nubs. I filed my nails with ruby stone. They grew back better than before because thee are no more weak points which snag and ruin much of the nail.

Without these constant snags and peeling layers my nails also seem to grow faster. I do not believe my nails are growing faster it is more likely I am noticing the growth because it stays put!

Wile my nails have undoubtedly gotten stronger from the hardener they have also gotten more yellow. Chemicals in Quimica have begun to turn my nails slightly yellow. Because yellow nails are not cool to me I switch it up and use this a base coat every other manicure. But simply adding a base coat on top has also eliminated some of the yellowing.

The texture is thick and viscous and forms a rubber like coat on your nails. But beyond coating your nails you can tell it absorbs into your nails.

 IMAG1976 IMAG1977

How can you tell? Besides the god awful smell if you get this on your skin/cuticle it will tingle, sizzle or even burn. Yes you read the right it will burn. The directions say when beginning use polish from the middle of your nail to the tip, avoiding over saturation as your nails adjust.

I have experienced sensitivity caused by this polish and my advice?

Tap you nails gently on a hard surface and watch the tenderness disappear.

I purchased on Amazon and consider this polish to be a permeant part of my nail polish arsenal!

Naked Nails: Ruby Stone’s Disappearing act

I feel like Ruby Stones have gotten harder and harder to find. The last 3 Sally’s beauty Supply stores I have been to no longer carry the item.; even thought  it is still available on their website .

I had two Ruby Stone nail files, but one ran away and the other broke!

IMAG1400

I didn’t even know they could be broken, but the file met a fatal fall from off my kitchen counter and never came back to life. I still use it, but it is much more difficult than normal.

IMAG1383

I tried replacing Ruby Stone with   another crystal/glass file found at Sally’s  ASP Crystal File. The file looks very nice & is comfortable to hold, but is of a lesser quality than the Ruby Stone.

The ASP Crystal file was dull after just a few uses and wore out quickly like many glass files. I even had to return it to store because the texture just rubbed off with me touching it! Essentially this file is a waste of money.

No substituting the original.

Is Hue for you?: Square Hue a Year in Review + coupon code

After one year of membership I bring you a review of my year in color!

There is something irresistible about getting gifts in the mail—-even if they are from yourself.  Square Hue is one of the ( too many) monthly items I gift to myself. I originally subscribed to curb my tendency to buy shades at department stores, but I stayed subscribed because I ADORE the colors and the formula.

IMAG1192

The Florida based company has no retail locations nor an option to buy  past colors. You sign up on their website and you are enrolled to receive a box of 3 full size hues each month. The colors are a mystery, but each month the company releases a promo photo to suggest the colors in the upcoming box.  The boxes ship the first week or last week of every month and shipping cost is built into the $21.00 per month price.

I have two minuses about the subscription:

  • I have to say sometimes I feel like colors overlap, but I think that is because after 36 bottles of Square hue, there are bound to be similar colors. However, the polishes come in a strong variety of styles: cremes, glitters, shimmer, hi gloss, even a holographic!  The colors also go well with the season, but with creativity can be used in any season!

IMAG1216 These two colors, received months apart, worked well for their respective season, but also worked well together;I think, anyway!

IMAG1171  IMAG1169

  • I will admit it is annoying to update your information. I wanted to change my payment data  and the only options are to email your credit card number or play phone tag with them until you can update via phone. They call back relatively quickly, but be prepared to leave a message. I believe they are working to improve this system. Besides that minor hurdle I have had no issues with SquareHue.

IMAG1200

But all is forgiven because in addition to great colors the company also tries to do some good with your monthly payment  as they are currently involved in the A21 Human Trafficking Campaign. A portion of all sales are “donated for prevention awareness, the protection of trafficked victims and the prosecution of human traffickers,” according to the website.

I have been a member since January 2013 and love it. I would highly recommend subscribing and with a no commitment policy you can try, cancel, suspend, or fall in love without worry.

Each month I also post an “unboxing” of the collection so you can hue too!

If you are ready to enjoy one month at the limited-time introductory price of 14.99 including shipping

OR

Be one of the first 25 people to use the code

herampersandhim

to get 50% off your first box (the box would be $7.50 + $5S&H = $12.50 total for the first box)

happy polishing!

UnBoxing the London Collection: Square Hue 1.13

I must say, Square Hue was lightening fast with this month’s shipment. Despite postal closures for Christmas and  New Year’s Day my box arrived on New Year’s Eve and the colors really took me by surprise. I expected deep colors for the season, but the box seems like a winter version of the fourth of July: deep blue, deep red, and a snow white.

As always the colors gave me something new to think about and obese over.

Lets start with my favorite: West End

This blue is the midnight-esque color people dream about. What some may call blue-black, this polish has so much dimension it defies typical boring dark colors.

IMAG1121

This blue is like ink. Though it goes on a bit translucent by the second coat this shimmer, as Square Hue calls it, gave full and ample coverage. I really like the reflective nature of this color. The paired with the deep saturation of the blue gives a little something special when considering all the flat, dark colors out there this winter.

IMAG1124

A red that also in keeps with deep theme in a different way is Buckingham, a high gloss creme.

IMAG1130
I tried out this red on my thumb nail and much like the blue it required two coats. Unlike the other high gloss creme red from last month New York collection, this red isn’t trying to bright.

IMAG1129This red is more mute, but bold enough because it is so rich to stand alone in a plain manicure or be a good base for some nail art.

IMAG1133

And finally the shocker of the box: the white Westminster. I don’t know why, but I didn’t anticipate a white, though it is the perfect representation of snow.  I will add this pearl white creme to my collection of white, but because of my sloppy polishing and my skin tone, I doubt I will rock an all white manicure.

Allow me to introduce

The Sunset Trio

Beauty 1: Crimsimmion

Described as” a unique red with undertones of deep gold,” this crimson packs a punch.

IMAG1076

This satin like red is full coverage in just one glide. In the picture left my pinky nail has just one coat of polish! This thick polish is full of shimmer that provides a real depth when applied. This creamy polish seeps in and stays in. One coat lasted me about three days.

IMAG1073

Beauty Number 2: Beachy

Described as”a beautiful, shimmery light gold with pale green undertones,” this is more a translucent gold. Expect to need 3 coats for full coverage. However even with three coats there is still maintains a certain level of  reflectiveness .

IMAG1082

IMAG1085

Beauty Number 3: Pure Gold

The name says it all! This Pure Gold is “a beautiful, shimmery light gold.” This is an opaque gold that gives great coverage. The gold is a yellow gold, not copper gold, not bronze gold, a pure yellow gold. I love this gold. IMAG1095 IMAG1091

UnBoxing the Passport New York Collection Square Hue 12.13

Square Hue seems to be getting faster and faster as they grow. Not only have I been seeing their ads pop-up as a troll beauty blogs, but my box also made it here in record time. Arriving on December 3rd, a short four days after shipment, my winter loves are here. Lets meet the colors! Fifth Ave -High Gloss Creme A shiny new red is always in season. IMAG0994This red goes on flat and gives good coverage in just a few quick strokes. But make no mistake; this red isn’t winter time dull. It is vibrant  red that will stand out against the drab colors of winter ( well drab in the north anyway). The red like all red may run when removing, so be prepared with acetone to remove this one or get ready to rub, rub, rub. IMAG1001 Continue reading

Un Boxing the Coastal Collection Square Hue 11.13

IMAG0882-1

Like the clock that jumped ahead this month square hue sprung something  new  on me that was quite the surprise. Rather than the earthy deep fall colors I was collection, Costal Collections, which arrived November 5th contained a trio of HiGloss cremes that where natural but not earth, fall but not dark and flirty and fun.

Chatham

IMAG0886-1IIMAG0887s in the brown family. This pale brown needed three coats for complete coverage. Using two coats gave me nearly an ash brown that was light and functioned much like a nude. The third coat turned the creme much deeper into a bark like color .

IMAG0888

The Second HiGloss creme i tried was Nantucket. This was my favorite from the collection this aquamarine type blue went on smoothly and was able to provide complete coverage in two coats. While I this color doesn’t scream November ( as I am sure no color really does it is very tranquil and would fit seamlessly into any season. IMAG0892-1

IMAG0885

And Finally I tried Portsmouth. This cousin to Nantucket reminds you of the water in a different way, rather than that green blue this polish conjures up the idea of still water. This more placid blue wears well, but would do best with some nail art to punch it up.

I must say I am please with this box, some unexpected quality colors. What did you polishers think?

hot and cold with color all over: NOTD

Sometimes reading other blogs in combination with one click buying gets me in trouble.

While reading Hairscapes blog I came across her post about Nail Fabulosity. I went to etsy and checked out the indie brand and decided I wanted to try their Big PIMPkin color. My polish arrived promptly 4 days letter packed neatly and ready for wear.

IMAG0815

The polish is an orange with big glitter rocks floating around. The polish is only orange when warm. When cold the polish becomes a green that is reminiscent of the green glow around Halloween ghost–a pale, translucent green.

Lets get hot and cold:

Cold:

Two coats goes on quick and easy. The glitter even all laid in the same direction, which is rare for me.

IMAG0820

The polish dried quickly in about five minutes.

IMAG0817

Hot:

In warm temperatures this thermal polish turns green. I wish I had more pictures to share of the green hue, but sadly it was difficult to capture.  The polish was green with orange glitter most of the time.

IMAG0835

Even though I would have preferred to see the orange more frequently this polish made it fun to wash my hands and even hold cold glasses. The shift is subtle, so you can really watch the magic happen.

The polish also lasted about a week with Venique top coat.

Overall this polish has great wear and was great fun. I would try more thermals from this brand!
